THE GOSPEL
AND THE CHURCH
By Jeremy
Hulsey
The
Gospel of Jesus Christ and the church of our Lord go hand in hand.
One cannot be saved without the gospel and one cannot be saved
outside the church of Christ (Rom. 1:16; Eph. 5:23; I Cor. 15:24). If
there were no Gospel, then the church could not exist likewise, if
there were no such thing as the Lord’s church, then the gospel
could not exist. One is dependent upon the other. Why?
For one
to gain entrance into the church of Christ he/she must obey the
gospel (hear – Acts 15:7; believe – Mk. 16:16’ repent of sins –
Acts 17:30; confess faith in Christ – Acts 8:37; be baptized for
remission of sins – Acts 2:38; 22:16).
Without
obeying the gospel man is lost and shall be eternally damned (II
Thess. 1:7-9). Who then would underestimate the great need of the
gospel of Jesus Christ?
But let
us not forget that the same actions by which we obey the gospel are
the SAME ACTS BY WHICH JESUS ADDS THE SAVED TO HIS CHURCH. When does
Jesus add one to His church?
When one obeys the gospel (Acts 2:36-47). The church is the body, the called out ones, those saved from their past sins, living in submission to Him (I Pet. 2:9; Acts 20:28). There is no salvation outside of Christ. To be in Christ is to be in His body the church (II Tim. 2:10; Gal. 3:27; I Cor. 12:13; Eph. 1:22-23). One does not pick and choose or join the church of his/her choice, for Jesus adds all those who have obeyed the gospel to His blood purchased institution.

In light
of the previous information we can conclude the following:
- All (in the Christian dispensation) must obey the Gospel to be saved.
- By obedience to the Gospel, Jesus adds the obedient to His church, the kingdom (Jn. 3:3-5; Mt. 16:18-19).
- The same acts of obedience to God’s will saves the person from their past sins, are the same actions by which Jesus adds the obedient to the church (Acts 2:36-74; I Cor. 12:13; Col. 1:18.)
- Therefore, if a person must obey the Gospel to be saved and the same acts by which one is saved he/she is added to the Lord’s body then one MUST be a member of the church of Christ to be saved.
