WHEN THEOLOGY GETS IN THE WAY
J. K. Gossett
(Minister, retired, Jonesboro, AR)
On the day of Pentecost, the ones who crucified Jesus inquired of the apostles, “Men and brethren, what shall we do?” (Act 2:37) Then Peter said unto them , Repent, and be baptized everyone of you in the name of Jesus Christ FOR THE REMISSION OF SINS, AND YE SHALL RECEIVE the gift of the Holy Spirit” (Acts 2:38). We read further in verses 40-41, “And
with many other words did he testify and exhort, saying, save yourselves from this untoward generation. Then they that gladly received the word were baptized: and the same day there were added unto them about three thousand souls.” The question here is clear. What then is the problem? Read on.
A student in a West Tennessee University inquired of a Greek professor, “Did Peter actually say in the original language, ‘repent and be baptized everyone of you in the name of Jesus Christ FOR THE REMISSION OF SINS?’” The professor said, “Yes, that is what he said grammatically, but theologically, I do not believe that is what he meant.” Clearly, the professor thought more of his theology than he did of the inspired word of God.
Jesus said, “He that believeth and is baptized shall be saved; but he that believeth not shall be condemned” (Mark 16:16).

The True Test of One’s Righteousness
Righteousness, simply stated, is doing that which is good--that which is right in the sight of God. And, it is to that end the Christian should strive to live his life in this world according to Paul (Titus 2:11-12).
John most aptly describes righteousness to include love of one’s brother, and, conversely, describes unrighteousness as failure to love one’s brother: 1JO. 3:7 Little children, let no man deceive you: he that doeth righteousness is righteous, even as he is righteous.
8 He that committeth sin is of the devil; for the devil sinneth from the beginning. For this purpose the Son of God was manifested, that he might destroy the works of the devil.
9 Whosoever is born of God doth not commit sin; for his seed remaineth in him: and he cannot sin, because he is born of God.
10 In this the children of God are manifest, and the children of the devil: whosoever doeth not righteousness is not of God, neither he that loveth not his brother.

John further states that one who hates (fails to love) his brother is yet in darkness (1Jo. 2:9). A. C. Quinn
