THE FIRST DAY OF THE WEEK

The first day of the week is a great day in the hearts of Christians. On this day God created light. On this day the light of the gospel was first preached to men in the name of the resurrected Lord. Jesus rose from the dead on this day. “And when the Sabbath was past, Mary Magdalene and Mary the mother of Jesus, and Salome, had brought sweet spices, that they might come and anoint him. And very early in the morning FIRST DAY OF THE WEEK came they unto the sepulcher at the rising of the sun. And they said among themselves, who shall roll away the stone from the door of the sepulcher? And when they looked, they saw that the stone was rolled away: for it was very great. And entering into the sepulcher, they saw a young man sitting on the right side, clothed in a long white garment; and they were affrighted. And he saith unto them, Be not affrighted: ye seek Jesus of Nazareth which was crucified: HE IS RISEN…” (Mark 16:1-6).
The resurrected Lord appeared to the apostles and others on the first day of the week “Then the same day at evening, being the first day of the week, when the doors were shut where the disciples were assembled for fear of the Jews, came Jesus and stood in the midst, and saith unto them, Peace be unto you” (John 20:19). “To whom (the apostles) also he shewed himself alive after his passion by many infallible proofs, being see of them forty days, and speaking of the things pertaining to the kingdom of God” (Acts 1:3).
The Church of Christ was established on the first day of the week. On this day for the first time, sinners were commanded to “repent and be baptized in the name of Jesus Christ for the remission of sins, and ye shall receive the gift of the Holy Ghost” (Acts 2:38).
The disciples of the first century observed the Lord’s supper on the first day of the week (Acts 20:7). They were also commanded to give on this day (I Corinthians 16:1-2).
