THE WORLD’S RESPONSE TO THE LORDS INVITATION
--by A. C. Quinn
Jesus invites, yea
implores, the world to come to him for healing and for rest in this
verse:
Come
unto me, all ye
that labour and are heavy laden, and I will give you rest. 29 Take
my yoke upon you, and learn of me; for I am meek and lowly in heart:
and ye shall find rest unto your souls. 30 For
my yoke is
easy, and my burden is light. Matt
11:28-30 (KJV).
The Lord’s invitation
offers the solution to basically every problem which can possibly
trouble the soul and spirit of man today. Rest for the soul is
promised, but it is conditioned upon taking his yoke. He promised
that His “yoke is easy, and my burden is light.” Tragically, the
Lord’s plea has fallen upon deaf ears.
The response of the
world today toward the Lord’s invitation is much like that of
Israel’s so long ago. One remembers Elijah’s challenge to Israel
from mount Carmel. Having called the four hundred fifty prophets of
the idol god Baal, along with all the congregation of Israel, he
issued this challenge:
And Elijah
came unto all the people, and said, How long halt ye between two
opinions? if the LORD be
God, follow him: but if Baal, then
follow him. And the people answered him not a word, 1
Kings 18:21 (KJV).
Notice the people’s response: And
the people answered him not a word.
God spoke loud and
clear these words: …
This is my beloved
Son in whom I am well pleased…hear ye him. (Matthew 3:17; 17:5.
Jesus concluded his
letter to each of the seven churches of Asia with these words:
He
that hath an ear let him hear what the spirit saith to the churches
(Revelation chapters 2 and 3).
He issued
still another message as follows:
He that
rejecteth me, and receiveth not my words, hath one that judgeth him;
the word that I have spoken, the same shall judge him in the last day
(John 12:48).
Dear friend, how will
you respond to the Lord’s invitation? Will you “answer him not a
word”? You will respond—one day!!
