STIRRED SPIRITS
By Luke Shira
Now while Paul waited for them at Athens, his spirit was provoked within him when he saw that the city was given over to idols” (Acts 17:16-18).
Man’s greatest accomplishments usually spring from stirred spirits.
The suffering of a child stirs our hearts. Whose heart was not stirred by the famous picture of a little child sitting in the middle of the road of a bombed out city?
Paul was stirred because of the idolatry in Athens. It was estimated they had something like 30,000 gods and goddesses. The whole city was given to idolatry(Acts 17:16). This should be enough to stir any God-fearing Christian, but modern day idolatry does not seem to have any effect on the modern day church member A member told me of attending services (if you want to call it that) of a congregation other than her own. The church had a huge banner in the auditorium welcoming everyone to the Easter services. A choir did all the singing for the congregation. When asked how she could worship under those circumstances, her answer was, “I sang to myself and felt like I had worshipped God.” No spirit stirred even though she thought what was being done was wrong. Why do church members go along with these change artists in the church? Do you realize Christ, Paul or those who died for the cause of Christ would to have a part in their services? Doesn’t that stir your spirit?
Does it stir your spirit to realize that the Devil is trying harder to gain control of your life, that you are to be Christ-like? Does it stir your spirit when you stop and realize that 156 persons per minute are dying out of Christ? Does it bother you that folks are groping in darkness, being led astray by preachers and creed-book preaching? There was a time when preachers stood up and defended the Gospel. How long has it been since you have heard a gospel preacher debate the truth? Peter said the church needs to be stirred (2 Peter 1:12-13). If we become provoked with stirred-spirits, worldliness, indifference, and ignorance of the Bible will disappear. We can no longer be like the Laodicea’s, (lukewarm).
