A Father’s Legacy

He could not give his children gold
So he gave them faith to have and hold.
He could not give them royal birth…
A name renowned throughout the earth.
But he gave them seeds and a garden spot
And shade trees when the sun was hot.
He could not give a silver spoon
Or servants waiting night and noon.
He gave them love and a listening ear
And told them God was always near.
He could not give them ocean trips
Aboard majestic sailing ships,
But he gave them books and quiet time;
Adventures found in pose and rhyme.
He could not give them worldly things
But what he gave them was fit for kings.
For with his faith and book and sod
He made each child aware of God.

Hear, my children, the instruction of a father, and give attention to know understanding; For I give you good doctrine: do not forsake my law. When I was my father’s son, tender and the only one in the sight of my mother, he also taught me, and said to me: let your heart retain my words; keep my commands and live. Get wisdom! Get understanding! Do not forget, nor turn away from my words of my mouth.
Proverbs 4:1-5
