Three Verses And A Law
by Curtis Ritchwood

“Therefore encourage one another and build up one another, just as you are doing,” I Thessalonians 5:11, “Each of us is to please his neighbor for his good, to his edification,” Romans 15:2, and “But encourage one another day after day,” Hebrews 3:13. These are commands of God from His law.

Even though the author in the book of Hebrews is not named, I believe the author was the apostle Paul. As we know Paul’s writings came from the Holy Spirit Himself. Galatians 1:11-12.

In Ephesians 3:3-4, the information given to Paul by the Holy Spirit was said to be a mystery. It was a mystery because it was hidden in the mind of the Father.

However, it is no longer a mystery because the Holy Spirit, knowing what is in the mind of the Father, revealed that information to the apostles; I Corinthians 2:8-12. They disclosed it to us in written form, the scriptures; thus all scriptures are inspired by God. II Timothy 3:16.

When perusing I Thessalonians 5:11, Romans 15:2, and Hebrews 3:13, we are reading the words from the mouth of God. Isaiah 55:11. God is commanding us to be encouraging. The three verses under consideration are of the Law of Christ. Galatians 6:2. Since being encouraging is law; therefore, those who are not encouraging are breaking His law, and the consequence for breaking the law is death, and separation from the Almighty God. Isaiah 59:2, Romans 6:23.

God gave us the mouth, Exodus 4:11; hence, he has the right to demand what it should be used for. As a potter has right over his clay, God has right over us. Romans 9:20-21 “But I say unto you, That every idle word that men shall speak, they shall give account thereof in the day of judgment,” Matthew 12:36.

The Biblical definition for Idle is “unprofitable.” In other words, our comments are supposed to be productive. When we engage in gossip, “the action of making a false spoken statement damaging to a person’s reputation secretly;” backbiting, “an individual who attacks the character of another by slander,” and of evil speaking, we are not being productive spiritually. In other words, we are not walking in the Spirit. Galatians 5:22-25.

Instead of building up, the words are tearing down; instead of causing peace, they produce division, and instead of being loving, they accentuate hatred.

Since an idle word is the opposite of encouragement, those who participate in such a manner are worthy of death, Romans 1:28-32. “For by thy words thou shalt be justified, and by thy words thou shalt be condemned, “Matthew 12:37.

The key to being encouraging is to first work on the heart. “The good man out of the good treasure of his heart brings forth what is good; and the evil man out of the evil treasure brings forth what is evil; for his mouth speaks from that which fills his heart.”  Luke 6:45.
