Take The Opportunity

By Curtis Ritchwood

Jesus makes a statement in Matthew 12:48, “Who is My mother and who are My brothers.” We know from John 19:25-27; Luke 2:51, Jesus had great love and respect for His mother.  Was He disowning His mother and siblings? The answer is no!

Why did Jesus say this? First of all, He took advantage of a teachable moment.  Secondly, the Jews needed to know. In the Jewish custom, traditions were domineering and those who did not conform were considered to be like dogs. Matthew 15: 21-26.

Having three years to complete the work of the Father, Jesus did not waste any precious time. For instance, He began His ministry at the age of 30. Luke 3:23. And His kingdom was established three years later. Act 2:1-47. Whenever there was a teachable moment, He took it.

According to Biblical history, the Jews had no dealings with the Samaritans. John 4:9. Jesus meeting the Samaritan woman at the well and teaching her in front of His disciples, prepared them for His spiritual kingdom where the Samaritan and the Jew are one.

The teachable moment not only affected the Samaritan lady, but the disciples as well. John 4:27-29. In John 4:34 Jesus said, “My food is to do the will of Him who sent Me, and to accomplish His work.” The Bible says in Ephesians 2:10, “For we are His workmanship, created in Christ Jesus for good works, which God prepared beforehand, that we should walk in them.”

Consequently, Jesus going to the woman was of the work of God. And it is today. Acts 8:5,12. “There is neither Jew nor Greek, there is neither slave nor free man, there is neither male nor female, for you are all one in Christ,” Galatians 3:28. Matthew 28:19, “Go therefore and make disciples of all nations, baptizing them in the name of the Father, and Son and the Holy Spirit.”

Since this is undeniably a work of God, Like Jesus, we should seek out an opportunity and take it!  In doing this we have the mind of Christ. Philippians 2:5. I’m reminiscent of the day our baby girl moved on to paradise. Many saints arrived at the hospital to comfort us.

During the visitation, we were singing praises to God, praying, and engaging in encouraging conversation, the doctor surprised at our behavior, asked, “who are you and where do you’ll go to church?” The brethren instantly took advantage of the opportunity and began to teach.

Take the opportunity! “Making the most of every opportunity, because the days are evil,” Ephesians 5:16.  “Conduct yourselves with wisdom toward outsiders, making the most of the opportunity,” Colossians 4:5. “So then, while we have opportunity, let us do good to all people, and especially to those who are of the household of the faith,” Galatians 6:10.
