Keeping God Before Us
By Robert Courtney

In Deuteronomy 6:1-9 we read where God instructed the people of Israel to listen to Him and follow His commandments. The people were to place His commandments in their heart and to diligently teach them their children when they talked to them, sit, walk, when you lie down, and rise up. They were to bind them on their hand as a sign and on their frontlets, and doorpost of their house as well as their gates.
Why did God want the people to teach their children all the time concerning God? Would not once or twice a day or even twice a week, as we do today be sufficient? Paul told us to study in
2 Timothy 2:15; but yet he did not specifically say how much.
Many today do not study the Bible at all but rather find it more convenient for others to teach it to them in class or worship service. But yet, this presents a problem. They fail to come to class or worship service therefore, they are not taught anything. Hence, they do not know what is being taught comes from God or man. If they do not God’s commandments, how can they live them or teach others?
We are told in both Deuteronomy 6 and 2 Timothy 2 why it is critical that we know God’s commandments. Verse 12 of Deuteronomy 6 says, “…least you forget the Lord…”; and 2 Timothy 2:15, “present yourself approved of God, a worker who does not need to be ashamed, rightly dividing the word of truth.”
Unless we study God’s Word, we will forget Him. The more one is absent from class and worship the harder it is to return…we forget the Lord! How can you teach if you do not know what to teach. A child is sent to school to learn. If the child does not attend, what do they learn? Nothing! If one does not study what does one learn? Nothing! DO YOU STUDY? Good! Study more. If you don’t, YOU SHOULD!
