THE CHURCH IS NOT A DENOMINATION
By J. K. Gossett

The church of which we read in the New Testament is not a denomination. It is not a part of anything. It is neither Jewish, Protestant nor Catholic (Ephesians 2:23-26; Hebrews 8:6:13).

Roman Catholicism and Protestantism both started too late to be identified with the New Testament or the church found revealed therein. The church was established in Jerusalem, not in Rome. Luther, Calvin, Wesley, Williams, and others were courageous men but their works, and works of those who followed them, resulted in the establishment of religious organizations unknown to the New Testament.

Modern man now lives in a world of religious confusion. Why? Some say because the Bible is in the hands of the masses. This, however, is not the answer. Religious divisions exist, not because men have the Bible, but because they refuse to believe and obey the teaching therein. Knowing this to be so, our plea is for men to forsake party names and creeds, turn away from human traditions and to be directed solely by the word of God. Men should speak when and as the Bible speaks and remain silent when the Bible is silent. Also, they should call things of scripture by scriptural names, and act in all matters of a religious or spiritual nature as the word of God will not produce a denomination, nor will it direct an individual to become a member of one. The Gospel makes Christians only. Groups of Christians are called “Churches of Christ (Romans 16:16).

If the church is not a denomination, what is it? The church is the bride of Christ (the Lord has only one bride), the family of God, the Kingdom of Christ; the temple of God. The church is comprised of the saved. Those who have believed, repented, confessed Christ, and been baptized for the remission of sins, are members of the church, members because the Lord added them. The church is a body of people who have been saved from sin. (Read Acts 2:36-47). Only in the Lord’s church can one be saved. Read it from your Bible. 1. The Lord adds the saved to the church (Acts 2:47). 2. Jesus is the savior of the body, the church (Ephesians 5:23). 3. The church was purchased with the blood of Christ (Acts 20:28).
