Life
and Consequences
The
present age appears to be characterized by the perception that one
should not be forced by circumstances of his actions to endure any
pain, discomfort, or inconvenience as a result. Those who are older
learned early that such was not the case at all. They knew what the
old adage “You have made your bed hard, so you must lie in it”
meant. It meant simply that when one made a bad decision he had to
live with whatever unpleasant consequences that decision brought on.
Clearly,
the Bible teaches man that he shall reap ill consequences for his ill
deeds as this passage indicates, “Be not deceived; God is not
mocked: for whatsoever a man soweth, that shall he also reap” (Gal.
6:7).
One only
has to read what the Israelites brought upon themselves as a result
of their waywardness. Babylonian captivity was the direct result if
their disobedience to God. They reaped accordingly. The prophets
warned them, but they paid no attention. “For they have sown
the wind and they shall reap the whirlwind: it hath no stalk: the bud
shall yield no meal: if so be it yield, the strangers shall swallow
up” (Hosea 8:7).
Men today
are sufficiently warned, as has been noted, not only of immediate
consequences of their deeds, but of the impending judgment—and the
day of accounting for every man. Listen to Paul’s warning: “For
we must all appear before the judgment seat of Christ; that every one
may receive the things done in his body, according to that he hath
done, whether it be good or bad” (2Cor. 5:10);…So then
every one of us shall give account of himself to God” (Rom.
14:12).
