Man Deceives Himself

There is a statement that goes like this: “You can fool me once, shame on you. If you fool me twice, shame on me.” There are a lot of folks who are being fooled twice. The easiest man to deceive is himself.
Paul said, “Let no man deceive himself. If any man among you seemeth to be wise in this world, let him become a fool that he might be wise” (1 Corinthians 3:18). Paul is condemning intellectual pride, one of the most hurtful of all vanities. He is simply urging a man to be humble enough to learn. Too often we think of God like man. The Psalmist said it best, “These things hast thou done and I kept silent; thou thoughtest that I was altogether such a one as thyself, but I will reprove thee, and set them in order before thine eyes” (Psalms 50:21).
We should be very careful when we think one way is just as good as another (Isaiah 55:8-9). Some try to change the scriptures. Jehoiakim took a pen knife to the scriptures (Jeremiah 36). Remember, you can break the barometer, but you cannot stop the storm. Man deceives himself when he thinks he can sow one thing and reap something else. Paul told the Galatian brethren, “Do not be deceived, God is not mocked, for whatsoever a man sows, that he will reap also” Galatians 6”7). James wrote, “Be ye doers of the word and not hearers only deceiving yourselves” (James 1:22). Too many folks are being fooled by what they hear and are not studying for themselves to see if what they are being taught is so or not, and when they are deceived, they do not seem to care. Remember, souls are at stake. Can we afford to be fooled the second time?
