Yeah But”
By David Shearer
Do any of you know anyone from of the “Yeah But” family? I do. They are the ones who are not short of talking. You know what I mean, the people who do more talking than listening. These folks talk, argue and but in to make sure they are heard. A lot of times they are trying to show you how smart they are and in so doing demonstrates what little they actually know. Ponder Romans 12:3.
Of course we must self examine or judge ourselves, too, because it is easier to see the faults and sins in other lives then to come to the realizations we have faults, too. Take note of Matthew 7:1-5 for Jesus addresses this issue.
When Jesus walked here on earth he encountered folks such as I mentioned. From this we can deduce that this is an age old problem common to mankind today. In John 8:42-47 Jesus says this kind of an individual is a child of the devil. This scares me.
Some surprise me by being totally indifferent to what the Bible teaches. I’m not sure, I think they believe the Bible; however, they have the misconception that it doesn’t apply to them. Here is what scares me: that I could fall into this same trap. That is why we need to examine ourselves, carefully, correctly, repentantly, and regularly.
In John 8:43, Jesus said, “Why do ye not understand my speech? even because ye cannot hear my word.” Doesn’t that sound like Jesus had the same trouble with people as we do today?
As a preacher, a lot of my sermons are pointed at me as well as the congregation. On occasion I have given a sermon pointed at a few individuals hoping that they will subtly pick-up on what I’m teaching, only to have them say afterward, “That was a good sermon preacher. I hope so and so heard it.” Now I can tell you that will deflate the preacher’s ego to know the one that you wanted to hear sermon didn’t. However, it is comforting to know that Jesus had the same problem.
The sobering fact is that as much as I want to make someone listen or change, I cannot. I can teach and show them what the Bible revels; nevertheless it is their decision, their destiny. Oh, how I wish I could make one listen.

Are you listening? If not, start today and make the appropriate changes.
