HEARING BUT NOT LISTENING
By Robert Courtney

The Greek word for “hear” is “akouo” pronounced “ak-oo –o.
It means “audience of, come to the ears, shall hear, be reported, and understand.

As children and as parents, we have been told and have said; “pay attention to what I am saying! Can’t you hear what I am saying?” Sometimes to get a child’s attention and for them not only to listen to what is being said, but to also understand and do it. How many times have we become frustrated when attempting to teach our children what is right and wrong? We feel sometimes that we are butting our heads against a wall.

How many times have we read how God instructed the people of Israel to hear and pay attention to what He is saying only to see them turn away? Our Lord and his servant Paul both referred to prophecy of Esaias: (Matt. 13:14; Acts 28:26-27)

Go to this people and say:
Hearing you will hear, And shall not understand;
And seeing you will see, and not perceive;
For hearts of this people have grown dull.
Their ears are hard of hearing, And their eyes have closed,
Least they should see with their eyes and hear with ears,
Least they should understand with their hearts and turn,
So that I should heal them.”
(Isaiah 6:9-10)

Just with Israel, God has told us time and time again to do as He instructed. Are we hearing but not listening; or are we hearing and listening. Remember, God has called us to Him and told us how to come to Him. “Do not harden you hearts….” (Heb. 3:15)

Walk prudently when you go to the house of the God; and draw near to hear rather than to give the sacrifice of fools, for they do not know that they do evil.” Ecc. 5:1
